Dearest Ladies, I am so overjoyed this morning when I type this as my search for a yoga pants and top that stay put is over (and also for zumba, running, pilates, and all the other exercises I do).
The search all started in one of my Centergy classes. I had one of my nicest workout tanks on (which was not particularly labeled a yoga top to be fair) and my coolest capri’s. We started downward dogs, mountain poses, and cobras in the fast paced fashion of Centergy and I started to feel my pants creeping down, the tank creeping up which was followed by a constant re-arranging by me and embarrassment creeping in. Not exactly the feelings you want in your “connect with your body and mind” type of an exercise class.
This brings me to the day RYU- Respect Your Universe contacted me to see if I would like to try out their fitness apparel. I have heard of them before, as they are local to me, and I knew they had high-end products that were very stylish, too. What I didn’t know, and researched before saying yes, was that they really valued sustainability; especially in the fabrics they select. Majority of the fabrics RYU selects are recycled or organic. After I e-mailed them with this question, I also learned that they have re-used scrap material to create their 2” headbands, and their cute scarfs. I live in a town that is BIG on environmentalism and definitely value sustainability a great deal! RYU started their line with martial arts apparel and moved onto other disciplines as well.
Here are the pieces I received and my opinions on each of them. I especially like that the products are not specially labeled for certain fitness activities. As someone who does workouts and sports in various disciplines, I like knowing that my fitness clothes will perform for any activity I participate in.
RYU was so gracious about me coming up with my own outfit. I chose the super stylish and functional Tanto Compression Tank in white, The Allure Capri in Alarm, and the wonderful Carry All bag in gunmetal. Although I love how these pieces look together ( and how well they go with my running shoes :), they have a whole LOT more qualities than just being stylish. (and oh yes, these are VERY stylish; when I was taking my pics at my sports club; I had at least three women stop by and ask me where I got them)
An important point to note is that I actually tested both the tank and the capri in three different workout classes; and also while running outside. (After these pics were taken, in three separate days) All my opinions are based on my actual experience on the functional aspects of the pieces.
Let’s start with the top. I have worn The Tanto Compression Top in Centergy, Zumba, and Pilates classes, and I have also ran outside in it. First of all, going back to the mishaps I had in my previous Centergy class, I loved how this RYU tank stayed put thanks to the stay put gripper at the hem. I can’t even begin to explain how much of discomfort this little detail saved me from. I think greatness lays in details and I really appreciated this little nifty detail. I also enjoyed that this top:
- Is so soft! It is actually one of the softest tanks I own now (and I buy very well made sports brands, and high end specialty tanks) and that says a lot! I need my comfort!
- Was so quick drying! I danced my way in this in Zumba, did power yoga routines in Centergy, and ran long and fast outside. I did sweat, a lot, but you would not see it on me standing next to me. This tank drank up it all, and quick.
- Do I even need to mention how cute this tank is? Wait till you see the back! The fit is so flattering too.
One suggestion I have for RYU is to add a pocket for removable pads to this tank. I think this is a must for any unnecessary nipple showing from below the tank’s fabric and makes for a much more comfortable workout experience. I think with a pad pocket this tank would be one of the best in the market.
The back is unlike anything I own. Love it!
Now let’s chat about the Allure capri!
The Allure Capri is made out of a recycled stretch fabric and hugs the body beautifully. I have matched this piece with the Tanto Tank during all the activities I listed above and the capri passed all of the workouts with flying colors. Once again, the most important test for me was during Centergy. Allure Capri, with it’s stay put waistband was not budging. The downward dog pose was so insistent in trying to lure my new beloved capri away from my waist; but it showed so much restraint and stayed loyal. Now this is a fitness pant I can trust! 🙂 I also loved that:
- it drew a lot of the sweat away from my body. Huge props!
- it had a little pocket for safekeeping my locker key.
- Moms (and actually anyone with a little tummy pouch) it kept my baby pouch (yes there still is a bit of it left 🙂 ) safely under wraps with it’s form fitting waist.
- The color, oh the color, is so eye-catching, loved walking around in that orange. In general though, this capri is seriously stylish in all colors offered.
Love the waistband detail!
Trying the capri out during some streches.
The third item RYU sent me is the Carry All Bag.
The Carry All Bag has internal pockets with a magnet closure for organization, and generous pockets for all your gym needs. Depending on how you carry your gym bag, it has handles for hand carrying and also a shoulder strap to wear it cross body or on your shoulder. This is a really easy-to-use, quality everyday bag and it will definitely become a staple in my fitness routine. Look out for “What is in my gym bag?” feature in the upcoming Back to Fitness installment. If you are new to theboxqueen you can read my fitness motivation series here.
RYU has been so kind to offer a special discount for theboxqueen readers who would like to get their own of these fitness pretties. With the discount code THEBOXQUEEN15 you can receive 15% off from all your “What’s New” section purchases. This offer expires on May 31st.
Overall Impressions: I really loved all the three pieces I tried. They are stylish, functional, and most importantly do what they promise. I value the sustainability aspect of the fabric and appreciate the brand’s efforts in this area. It is also evident that everything is high in quality from the softness of the fabric to the way the apparel fits the body. I will definitely be purchasing more of RYU.
