Hi Ladies, it is time for another Stylish Surprise from Modcloth. No wonder I always get excited for these reviews; Stylish Surprises are not very frequent. You need to snatch them up soon after they become available, and this time around I was able to order two clothing SS boxes, and one shoe box. ($10 each) This is the second time I ordered these surprise grab bags, and seriously loved all three items I received; what are the odds! 🙂 Here is my initial Modcloth SS Review, and most recent ones, dress, and knit top.
UPDATE MARCH 2017: Shop the latest Stylish Surprises Here!!!
If you are not familiar with Modcloth, it is a super cute (and now huge ) online boutique with an underlying vintage and retro vibe. They carry a ton of original brands, and really unique pretty, and whimsical pieces from clothing, to shoes and even home accessories.
What I always notice about Modcloth, is that they really are great at building a community for, and from their loyal customers. ( I think this goes both ways, people return for more as Modcloth is so welcoming and inclusive) Modcloth has a style gallery with thousands of pictures customers upload; where they can get feedback with likes and have followers. There is also Be The Buyer section where customers influence what Modcloth will carry in the future. To me they are just an amazing business model, and an all over fun place to shop at.
Have you ever tried Modcloth’s Stylish Surprise? What pieces did you get?
Let’s have a closer look at my latest Modcloth Stylish Surprise. As I mentioned, Modcloth does these mystery boxes occasionally. I believe it is usually when seasons turn, and when they have extra merchandise from the previous season.
I gave names to the pieces myself as there was no product name on the receipt; just numbers. The first part is the brands.
Mata Traders Origami Dress ( was $84.99 now $28.99 at Mata Traders online shop) This dress was the first out of the box and not surprisingly it is sold out at Modcloth. I was able to find the dress at the brand’s website on sale. It also does not come as a shock that the dress is already discounted ( supporting my claim of end of season items). However I paid only $10 for this dress and this is still a great deal in my book, considering the dress goes for almost three times what I paid for even on sale.
The cutest details of the dress are without hesitation the origami print ( total nostalgia- when I was in elementary school there was a TV show where a lady thought origami to kids. I loved it, bought the special papers and would follow along and create smt. new each week! 🙂 and the tiered skirt. I also love the waist area with that cute fabric, which acts as a built- in belt, defining the waist. All the better!
I paired the dress with a Banana Republic mini cross body bag ( very similar to this Frye at Urban Outfitters) , and shoes with a tiny wedge from DSW. (very similar to this at Nordstrom) This dress, even with all the little details, felt unfussy to me. I didn’t want to make it smt, it wasn’t. It felt like high heels, and fancy clutches would be a tad too much.
Style tip: Sometimes you can take your cue for accessorizing from your main piece depending on what it makes you feel. Here I felt this dress was a pretty version of an easy day dress; I didn’t want to complicate it. I used an almost flat summery wedge, and a cute but unassuming mini cross body, to continue this feeling I got, and ended up with what I find to be a pretty and casual look.
Breckelle’s Knee-High Lace up Boots New Ladies Tan Leatherette Knee High Military Lace up Boot with side Zip ($49.95) Once again, these lace-up boots I got, were no longer on sale at Modcloth. I was able to locate it for you ladies on Amazon in case you want more details, again on sale down from original price $75.
I have to admit that at first when I saw that I got boots; while I already was in a total spring &summer state of mind; it was a bit disappointing. I kept seeing these really pretty Mary Janes/sandals/pumps other girls got on instagram, and was hoping for one of those. This all changed when I put the boots on though, over my skinny jeans. The fit over my legs is spot on, the style goes with jeans, and leggings, as well as short skirts/shorts if that’s more your style, and the heel is perfect; not too flat. For $10 I got a $50 boots ( sale price) and that’s one heck of a deal!
A closer look at the detailing of the boots.
I wear this type of an outfit, almost always, in some part of my day. A loose top, skinny jeans/leggings, and usually booties. I think these lace-ups have been a welcome addition to this uniform and added so much interest to it with its shape, and details. The knit is from last year’s Zara summer collection, pants are BCBG generation, and the bag is Sarah Wells carry-all; for which there still is a 15% of unique code for theboxqueen readers. (until the end of April)
Lulumari Lace Peplum Top ( Lined all the way on the front side) Unfortunately I couldn’t find this at an actual online store. I came across it at a couple swap groups, and pinterest. From what I gathered, based on other Lulumari pieces for sale, I estimate the original price to be between $30- $40. I found a great, super cute alternative at Macy’s though!
I think I saved the best for last; if not the best, at least the most original Stylish Surprise piece I received this time around. For one it’s LACE people; lately I am in love with lace. Secondly it’s peplum; and not just any peplum, the flattering kind. ( we all need a bit of extra help, I certainly do! This peplum hides mommy tummy) But the real surprise is on the back, just scroll down,
Ta-daaa down to the waist it is sheer lace, pretty fancy, no? One con could be that you either need to wear a backless bra for this, ( like I did) or you can wear a lace bandeau inside. As expected from such a glam top, I went all out with high heels, my favorite skirt from Stitch Fix I got a while ago ( seen in this Stitch Fix review ), and a metallic clutch.
