What is your favorite family time activity for cold winter days ladies ? For my family it’s hands
down movie nights.

I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned this before; my undergrad is in communications with a focus of movie making. I’ve been a HUGE movie buff my whole life. Luckily I married a guy who loves watching films just as much, and we’ve instilled the same interest in our kids.

Although we usually try to include the whole family for our movie nights, sometimes kids need one on one time. I try my best to connect with each of my kids individually, planning activities according to their age group, and carving time to talk about life, & what’s going on with them.

Hearing the whimsical animation The Boxtrolls made it’s debut at Walmart, I thought it would be a great chance to catch up with my 10 year old on a Mom & Daughter Movie Night. Coming from the creators of Coraline and ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls is the story of a young orphaned boy raised by underground trash collectors. There is an evil exterminator with ulterior motives trying to destroy the trash collectors, and the young boy goes through a self discovery journey while trying to save the community who raised him.

The movie was refreshing in the sense that it was unique compared to the expected super colorful, and cheery kids films. My daughter found the edgier visuals ( underground world of trash collectors) interesting, and really enjoyed seeing how Eggs, the main character evolved in his self discovery. Go buy the DVD to watch with your older kids while supplies last. It has great conversation starter messages.

My daughter & I start our movie nights with some good old popcorn fun. We continue with taking notes on cute papers, answering some questions we came up with earlier to open up  discussions about the movie. We usually finish with some kind of art activity as my girl loves her art.

Some other ideas for Movie Night:

  • Tie-in the movie with related board games
  • Play movie bingo as a family
  • Make a craft related to the movie watched. For instance, for this one, you can make Boxtroll puppets.

We LOVE Pop Secret Home-Style Popcorn. The 10 count box is perfect to always have a good supply of this goodness on hand. As we also both adore chocolate, a lot of the times we add chocolate sauce over our popcorn after it’s popped, & and is just hot out of the microwave. You can also choose to melt the chocolate sauce by putting your bowl of popcorn back in the microwave for an extra 30 seconds. Yum!!

Answering some questions we’ve come up with right after the movie ended. We don’t want to forget any details. 🙂

bt_1123I wrote the questions, and we each answered with our own hand writing. The right one is my daughter’s and the left one is mine.

Here is a closer look at our questions & answers. First up is my daughter’s card.

She really liked the sassy, bossy, and strong Winnie who gave a chance to Eggs, and the  underground trolls.

Next up is mine.

I was impressed with Eggs, and watching him accept who he is, and take action to make a change for The Boxtrolls who raised him.

These were the exact answers from the papers we filled out, and they opened up great discussions about The Boxtrolls.  More importantly we got the opportunity to discuss some themes from the movie such as what being prejudiced means, importance of standing up for yourself, and second chances; all of which are useful concepts to grasp for real life.

We wrapped up our night by doing artwork inspired by The Boxtrolls. My daughter showed me how to draw her favorite character from the movie, Winnie. This is going on the fireplace. <3

If you are also looking for a great bonding experience with your kids 7, and older, I wholeheartedly recommend picking up The Boxrolls (while supplies last), and a box of Pop Secret Home – Style popcorn from Walmart, and plan some activities around it. You also like chocolate? Try our version of Popcorn infused with chocolate sauce. 🙂

I am always open to learning new ideas on fun family nights at home for the cold days. Looking forward to read your ideas in the comments to apply them in our lives. 🙂
