As you may already know, I have a 5 month old Golden Retriever puppy Emma that I am pretty much enamored with. Since I posted about her last week, I’ve been receiving such nice comments on social media, and in emails. Seems like a lot of you want to hear more about
her, and I am starting today by talking about the kinds of activities we do together, and her nutrition.

Our breeder started feeding Emma’s litter Purina® Pro Plan® right when they started on solids. She told me the reasoning behind feeding her litters Purina® Pro Plan® . I learned that the brand is the first dry dog food to use real meat as #1 ingredient to help promote total body health. This may result in a shinier, more gorgeous coat, more energetic dog, and healthier skin.

As our breeder also competes in obedience, and dog shows, she also told us a fun fact. 8 out of 8 Westminster Best In Show Champions were fed Purina® Pro Plan® . Not that we are entering Westminster anytime soon, but I still thought it was cool. 🙂 I decided to continue keeping her on the same food. Luckily our local PetSmart carries the brand.

Emma is the second Golden I’ve had in my lifetime. When my hubby, and I were still in graduate school we had a boy Golden named Marco. He was the best dog anyone could ever ask for. I went to graduate school very young, and always wished I had the time & resources to do more with him. Now some ten years forward and I decided to make that old dream a reality with my new girl.

Emma and I are in puppy preschool at the moment, and for fun we are pursuing the AKC Star Puppy Title. Star Puppy basically means your puppy is well taken care of, and knows the basics of training. (which I’ll show you how to do below ) If you pass the test, they give you a certificate, and you can register as a Star Puppy.

Next step, if we would like to pursue would be Canine Good Citizen title. I also hope to do some puppy agility, and maybe even rally with her. All these activities help you form a strong bond with your dog. They are the happiest when they are busy; body, and mind.

I am going to show you three basic Puppy Skills that’ll be useful for the life of your dog.

PUPPY PRESCHOOL WITH PURINA® PRO PLAN® – THREE BASIC SKILLS

1) Learning to SIT

One of the most useful skills you can teach your puppy is no doubt how to sit on command. This not only helps establish respect between the dog, and her person, but it also can be used to switch the dogs attention to a positive behavior when she is misbehaving. For instance when jumping on people, I ask Emma to sit, and her focus switches to a good behavior from the undesirable jumping.

How to Tip: You take a treat in your hand, show it to your puppy, and lure her to sit by holding the treat to the dogs nose, bringing it upwards. Unless we are in a very distracting situation, I alternate between treats, and Emma’s Purina® Pro Plan® kibbles. The moment your puppy sits you say “Yes” enthusiastically and reward your puppy. As your puppy becomes more reliable you start using the word “Sit” along with it.

You reward as soon as your puppy’s bottom is on the floor completely.

2) LEARNING DOWN

Learning down is important as it’s the foundation for down/stay that’ll come later. I also use down a lot when I want to have my puppy busy with a bully stick, or a stuffed kong. I get her to lie down, and give her the reward.

How To Tip: First get your puppy to sit. Get an irresistible treat in front of your puppy’s nose. Start taking the treat down between the puppy’s paws. If the puppy doesn’t go down, put her to sit again, and start over. When puppy is completely down, be super enthusiastic, and reward with a couple treats on the floor between her paws. This is so she doesn’t get up to get the treats.

3) Learning LEAVE IT

Leave it can be a lifesaver. It’s a behavior that’s not easy to perfect, so the sooner you start teaching your puppy the better. Think about a potentially poisonous object she can pick up, or  a rock she can choke on. If you teach her “leave it” you can save her from a hazardous situation.

How to Tip: This is a two tiered training process. You first need to start small. Take a treat, put it in your palm, and make a fist. Let your puppy smell it. As long as she tries to get to the treat do not open your fist. The moment she calms down, and sits, open your fist and let her take the treat. Practice this many times, slowly adding the word leave it.

After your puppy is reliable with the above exercise, start trying to put kibbles on your puppy’s paws like I show above. Say leave it, and treat.

  • Sophia

What a sweetheart your Emma is! We are getting a puppy in two weeks. I’ll refer back to this tutorial.

    • Theboxqueen

Sophia which breed of puppy are you getting? How super exciting!! You need to come and tell me all about your puppy. What’s the name? By now you should have gotten her. Hopefully you’ll find the tutorial helpful. 🙂 XOXO, Elif

  • Daniela Uslan

What an adorable puppy! My dog already knows sit and down, but after reading this, I think she needs to learn “leave it” as well!

    • Theboxqueen

Leave it works great as long as they do it. At this age they need a LOT of repetition but I think “leave it” is super useful behavior. 🙂 Thanks for saying hi. XOXO, Elif

  • Richard Hicks

What a sweetie! Nothing like an obedient doggie!
