Do you ever suffer from adult acne? As I talk about beauty on TheBoxQueen frequently, I’ve
been asked a couple times if I get adult acne and what I do to prevent/treat it? Today I’ll share some of my tips with you.

5 TIPS FOR MANAGING ADULT ACNE
5 TIPS FOR MANAGING ADULT ACNE

The truth is I do from time to time get adult acne ( more so during certain times of the month as acne can be hormonal) and when it happens it certainly is not pretty. I think along with the obvious physical symptoms, adult acne also stirs up emotional feelings reminding me my teen years’ acne agony LOL. Here are some ways you can prevent and treat it, if adult acne also still sometimes knocks your door!

1) Clean Your Face and Your Make-up At Least Daily.  This sounds like a no brainer but I think something we tend to skip when we are tired or very sleepy. (although we many not want to accept the fact 🙂 ) I can admit I’ve gone to bed more than a couple times after a long day of running around and a night of writing/reading/watching movies to late hours, getting super sleepy, and just throwing myself to bed. Not very ladylike I know, and it’s not everyday, but it does happen nevertheless. Most of the adult acne is the result of blocked pores, so make sure to throughly clean your face at least daily or ideally morning & night.

2) Use a Formulated For Adults Acne Medication such as Acnevir®. Adult acne is different from teen acne as adult skin is thinner & has changed over the years.

An adult acne medication such as the three-in-one homeopathic gel Acnevir® works great for adult acne, and it is also formulated to be less harsh on sensitive skin. I’ve tried Acnevir® during the inevitable acne week of the month 🙂 and have gotten good results. It also saved me from going to a dinner party with industrial strength make-up to cover the pimples LOL.

Acnevir® clears acne pimples, reduces redness, and prevents future breakouts. It’s for 18+, works for all skin types & tones, and does not tint, or stain your clothes. ( woot woot for that one right ladies? ) It also works better as Acnevir®  has three active ingredients versus just one. When I used it I felt like it went on smoothly, and was absorbed pretty quickly. I like that you can purchase it easily from a wide list of retailers including Walmart. Overall great help for those tough adult acne days! When I get adult acne this is what my routine looks like:

  • Clean face
  • Use Acnevir® in the affected area. (I seem to get them on the sides of my chin)
  • Moisturize on top – Very easy and it works!

  3) Stay Away From Chocolate & Fried Foods My dermatologist told me this once. She said these foods don’t necessarily cause acne but they increase its occurrence, and make it worse as they cause the sebaceous glands to overproduce. I eat pretty healthy, and do my best to eat fried foods in moderation. Chocolate my friends is a whole another story. Chocolate got a forever hold of me, but if you can save yourselves do it 🙂 as apparently your skin will thank you for it!

4) Drink a Lot of Water  8 cups of water a day has been long recommended. I am speaking more from experience though. I am working really hard on this one as historically the more I drank close the suggested amount of water, the less acne I got. Overall my skin glows more as it gets hydrated from within. As a tea fan, it’s easy for me to reach for a cup of tea every time I feel thirsty, but I really try hard to drink more water. It flushes out the toxins too. NEED!!

5) Do Not Over- Exfoliate Your Skin Although cleaning your face daily is essential, over-exfoliating it is as detrimental. I’ve learned this from the esthetician I go to for facials. She stressed that over-exfoliation strips oils from your face. Your glands will react to this by over compensating which means even more oil production which results in acne. Use a gentle exfoliating cream, and apply it only once a week if you get a lot of adult acne.

  • Ashley Bree Perez

I would love to win this! I do have my acne breakouts and as an adult I try to just eat healthy and avoid eating greasy foods. It is difficult for me because I have a sweet tooth and love my sugary foods with grease but I try to avoid it for the sake of my skin and health. I also just bought a Clarisonic Mia and wow, that has helped a little with my acne! Hope to win this so I can try it out. 🙂 this is kind of a random question but what lipstick are you wearing in this post? I love it!

    • Theboxqueen

Ashley it sounds like you have great methods for keeping acne at bay. I totally understand the sweet tooth. I am not that much into candy but LOVE chocolate LOL. My lipstick here is a mix of two products. One is Too Faced Melted peony with Bite Beauty Lipgloss from my Popsugar box ( should have it in one of my reviews) in Lush Fruit over it. 🙂 Best of luck. XOXO, Elif

  • I never had an issue with acne when I was teen, but now I’m having more breakouts as an adult as I’ve ever had! It’s really frustrating because nothing I’ve tried so far has worked. I did just buy the GlamGlow Supercleanse, though, after trying a sample from Sephora, and it’s showing some promise.

    • Theboxqueen

You need to tell me how the Supercleanse works for you. I am always interested in learning about good cleansers. I think that’s one of the most important steps in dealing with acne. I am in a similar boat in terms of not having much acne as a teenager and having more in certain times now. These all help luckily. 🙂 Best of luck Danielle. XOXO, Elif

  • Joyce Beach

I had a baby 6 months ago, and holy cow has my face gone through the ringer since then! Some things that have helped are Moroccan argan oil and vitamin C cream. I feel like my skin needs more nourishment now that I’m over 30 and am going through all these hormonal pregnancy/postpartum changes!

    • Theboxqueen

Joyce having my kids, and each pregnancy had a major effect on my skin as well. I totally hear you. Not only I started having more acne but I also ended up with sunspot type dark spot. Totally hear you and sounds like you have a good regimen. <3 Best of luck, and thx for saying hi. XOXO, Elif

  • Claudia

Great tips! have been suffering all my life with Acne . I noticed that what i eat will trigger it more like white bread and fresh fruit and veggies calms it down some.

    • Theboxqueen

I’ve read a lot about certain food triggering acne. For me it seems like chocolate doesn’t help LOL. Best of luck!! XOXO, Elif

  • Gina Daily

You definitely have beautiful, glowing skin! Sounds like you have your skincare routine down to a science! My best tip is see a dermatologist if you aren’t having luck with OTC products. It’s the only thing that really made a difference for me!

    • Theboxqueen

Thanks Gina. 🙂 I do have a working skincare routine and have an obsession with discovering new products LOL, however I still do get acne in certain times. Your tip of seeing a dermatologist is smt I believe in too. They do help a lot when an issue doesn’t resolve with home care. Happy weekend dear. XOXO, Elif

  • Melinda Lozano

I too suffer from adult acne and I’ve been using my clarisonic on a daily basis and it really has changed how my skin looks. I love their cleanser and have noticed if I feel a breakout coming I just gently go over the spot a few times with my clarisonic and it will be gone the next day.

    • Theboxqueen

Sounds like you’ve found a great solution. I have to look into clarisonics cleanser. I know the tool is great but haven’t tried that cleanser. Best of luck with the giveaway Melinda. XOXO, Elif

  • Darby

I am careful not to overwash and dry out my skin

    • Theboxqueen

Very important tip for sure. Best of luck. XOXO, Elif

  • Oh this one is what I need. The acne that appears on my face at certain times of the month, drives me crazy.
I will look for this gel here in the UK. Thank you for posting this one, Elif!! Very useful 🙂
