Today’s Golden Tote Review has a significance for me as April is my long awaited large tote purchase after many months of just mystery & small tote buys. There were also a couple months I had to pass due to travels or frequent shopping expeditions. I really missed the fun of large Tote’s, choosing two of my favorite items as my choice pieces, and receiving cute
surprises all at an amazing value.
If you are new to TheBoxQueen, I suggest you start your reading from my detailed Golden Tote Review section. You’ll find information on how Golden Tote works, lots of styled looks from the pieces I’ve received, and as always my style tips.
I’ve started reviewing Golden Tote in January ’14 but I’ve been their customer since they’ve first started their grab bags way earlier. Although you can read all the details in my previous reviews, see the important points & a quick summary of this clothing service below.
HOW GOLDEN TOTE WORKS
- As a long time customer, one thing I find most helpful with Golden Tote has been subscribing to their newsletter which you receive via email when each monthly sale starts, or for any kind of updates. You are also sent styling tips, or list of next months items. Popular Golden Tote choice items sell quickly. In addition, sometimes if there is any type of problem on the sale day and they need to postpone, you get communication this way. I am not kidding when I say You NEED this newsletter, and why not it is a FREE service. 🙂
- Golden Tote lets you choose one choice item for a small tote ($49) or two choice items for a large tote. ($149) The rest of your tote is surprise items from a variety of brands including Golden Tote’s house brands. These are boutique style & trendy pieces. I love getting introduced to really cool designs, and up to date, fresh styles at an AMAZING DEAL. ( Seriously though, the large tote is $149 and I’ve received pieces that were more than $68 on their own)
- One of the very best assets of Golden Tote is the Facebook Golden Tote Trading Group. This is a LOVELY group of ladies you can talk Golden Tote and trade with. You can share your joy for the items you got, or your frustrations which may happen from time to time when you get attached to a service so tightly LOL. Trust me, you’ll enjoy the love and support you’ll undoubtedly find in this group. ( you can become a member by request)
Now are you ready for the fun part? Let’s take a look at all 6 of my items. I’ll include my thoughts on each, and will include my style tips as usual. <3
1) Easy Sundress in Coral (First Chosen Item)
This coral shift dress is my first chosen item. Actually this is the dress that made me decide to purchase a large tote in April.
Usually I am not into this type of shift dresses that are not slim fitting. I end up swimming in them, and they can be unflattering for my body type. I need to make sure to define my waist, which is the smallest part of my body, to make loose shifts wearable. Why I chose thisdress then you may ask? The details got me ladies!! I adore the lace insets, coral is one of my favorite colors, and the fabric seemed to be so summery. ( and it is 🙂 ) Find my style tip & outfit details under the pics below.
Dress: Golden Tote | Belt: LOFT (similar from LOFT) | Shoes: DSW (similar style I love) | Bag: Banana Republic (previous seasons) | Accessories: Popsugar Must Have( use MUSTHAVE5 for $5 off from your box), Wantable & Various Boutiques
STYLE TIP: Honestly in my personal opinion, unless the shift dress ends up being close fitting on your body, majority of women, and body types would benefit from a belt like mine. I chose a thin belt, as I didn’t want to take away from the overall look, and simplicity of the shift. You can also fancy the dress up with a wider belt and pumps if you want to style it for an evening out.
I added some gold jewelry, and my new wedge open toe shoes. I think wedges help outfits look relaxed, and keeps them from getting too fussy for an everyday look. My small, basic bag also helps to create a casual feel.
Also note you can use this dress as is for the pool, or the beach as a super stylish cover up. I don’t think I will as I want to keep mine as new looking as possible LOL. I just LOVE this dress. <3
2) Renee C Printed Top With Split Back (Surprise Item)
This printed split back top was on the very top of my Golden Tote pack. The pattern immediately grabbed my attention, and I was even happier to see the style. The v neck in the front is pretty, but the split back detail is the special detail that makes this top. <3
STYLE TIP: This top can work with jeans, shorts, pencil skirts to achieve many different looks from casual to girly, and fancy. I wanted to create a casual chic look, and matched my print top with these destroyed jeans, one of my latest favorite purchases.
Top: Golden Tote | Jeans: Nordstrom ( Everyone needs these!!) | Shoes: Boutique (similar here & here) | Accessories: Wantable & Online Boutiques Bag: Zara
3) Oat & Fawn Bird Print Blouse ( Surprise Item)
I have a thing for cute animal prints. Although I like the whimsical effect they have on various apparel, I still want these pieces to be modern, and trendy. This blouse is just that. I’ve found the exact Oat & Fawn bird print blouse here, and there is also the pug print version. <3
Close-up of the cute yellow birds.
STYLE TIP: My first impression of this blouse was that the bottom part could be a bit bulky for my body type. It goes down straight and has a very slight flare to it at the bottom. On my frame worn untucked the blouse looks unflattering. At first I thought I may end up selling this piece on the boards which I am undecided about still.
I did find a solution to my style dilemma though! I decided to tuck the blouse in a pencil skirt worn with peep toe high heels. I must say I love it 100 times better this way. I also bunched up the arms so that I don’t feel swollen up by all the fabric. If you have similar problems with this top, I would encourage you to try the same, and you may feel differently about the top. At least now I am considering keeping it.
Top: Nordstrom | Skirt: J.Crew Factory (similar) | Peep Toe: Guess | Accessories: Wantable
4) Chris & Coral Elastic Waist Maxi Dress in Mint Floral (Surprise Item)
This mint floral maxi dress is definitely an amazing surprise item match for me. I wear maxi dresses all the time in summer, and always need more of the wear and go type comfortable pieces. The fit, and soft fabric of this particular maxi is perfect.
STYLE TIP: I think maxi dresses as versatile as this one is the easiest of pieces to style for summer. If you want to add some height just add wedges, some fun colored nail polish such as my mint polish, and use a couple of your favorite accessories. I love to side braid my hair with maxi dresses to show off my most loved summer drop earrings like these Wantable blue triangles.
Dress: Golden Tote | Shoes: DSW (similar here) | Accessories: Wantable
5) Giraffe Dress ( Second Chosen Item)
The giraffe dress is my second chosen item. It was also in March tote. I didn’t end up purchasing the March tote but did not forget the adorable giraffe dress. When it also showed up in the April tote, I knew I had to try my luck with it.
STYLE TIP: I said I’ll try my luck with this dress as usually high waisted dresses don’t work amazing on my body. This is the second piece I am on the fence about. My style solution for it was to belt it with a dark brown wide belt. I think this balanced out the proportions a bit. I also wanted to balance the prettiness of the dress with edgier boots. As you may know I love contrasting styles. Deciding whether to keep this piece or not, and would LOVE to hear your opinions.
Dress: Golden Tote | Belt: Mango | Boots: From a Boutique
6) Bo-Bel Tiered Tank (Surprise Item)
My final surprise item is this tiered tank. This piece is definitely right up my style alley, and it is happily joining my summer wardrobe. I love the flowing cut, super soft fabric, and the middle patterned section. The back bow is the cherry on top. Love, love!!
STYLE TIP: As the top has a flowy style, it looks best with slim fit bottoms, worn untucked of course. Shorts, leggings, and skinny jeans would all work great. I chose to pair mine with white shorts that peak from down under the top. I think they go with the ease of the tank. Add a bright, and happy tote, and comfortable, but put together wedges and you are ready for a day full of adventure. <3
Top: Golden Tote | Shorts: Banana Republic | Shoes: DSW | Bag: DSW | Accessories: Boutique purchases
Adore that bow; don’t you ladies? 🙂
Have you ladies bought the April tote? Which chosen & surprise items did you get? What did you think of your pieces? I am so looking forward to hear what you all thought of it; and would love to learn which pieces were your favorites
Overall Impressions: I am happy that I purchased the April Golden Tote as the majority of the pieces are keepers, and the the other two whether I end up keeping or not are high quality brands, and very cute items. Considering the prices of each piece sold elsewhere, or the pricing of the similar items by the brands sent, the value is once again AMAZING!
