My now 9 month old Golden Retriever puppy is named Emma. Her name fits her so well. Every time we say Emma, she looks at us with those velvet eyes, and I can bet a million dollars she smiles back. (at least that’s what we think as her adoring humans 🙂 ) Her name almost wasn’t tough, Emma I mean. I should start from where her story began.

I’ve always loved dogs. When I was growing up I asked for a puppy every single day. I would almost beg my dad for one, and although he wanted to say yes my mom who kept/keeps an immaculate home vetoed it every time. ( sorry mom LOL. I love you and I understand now what a HUGE responsibility those lovable fur balls are)  So we got an aquarium, and a canary, and two parakeets, and more fish. 🙂

When I came to the NW and started graduate school guess what I did the first moment I had my own place. In classic Elif fashion, despite everyone else’s warnings of what ginormous work they were, I got a puppy. The cutest Pug you ever did see; my Daisy. Her name came from the sweetest English Setter our family friend had growing up, and who am I kidding a little bit from Daisy Duck haha. She is now 14, and proof that you need to listen to your own heart with important life decisions. <3

When we got married with hubby (my then boyfriend when I got Daisy), and started having kids, we started discussing adding a sporty, active dog to our family. I’ve always LOVED Golden Retrievers with a passion so a Golden it would be. After waiting for the kids to get a bit older, (on hubby’s insistence LOL. It was a good compromise tough. I mean I thrive with multi-tasking but even I admitted at one point, with two kids in diapers and a 5 year old, life was C-R-A-Z-Y) we finally went and met a breeder. Our 10 year old picked a calm girl with some sass in her that we all appreciated. Pick-up time was 5 weeks ahead and the name discussions began.

First her name was to be Lemon. I love lemons. I can’t think of a salad without a lemon/EVOO mix, love their scent, lemon trees, and the color yellow. For a couple weeks I stuck to the name Lemon. Then I thought of the term lemon for cars, (silly right? don’t ask me why I started thinking of that all of a sudden haha) and the discussion was open again. We tossed around names like Apple, Strawberry,( my 5 yr old) Bella, Belle nothing seemed just right for that sweet, and confident girl.

It came to me sitting on our porch reading a book one afternoon. I should have known that my beloved Jane Austen books would have the perfect name for my puppy. I love the book Emma, especially the character development, and growth Emma shows throughout the book.  She is a strong character with great intentions tough misguided and she learns so much from her inexperienced decisions. I love that she is a bit flawed like the rest of us, but confident. Our girl was such an Emma, and a name was born. <3 ( It also helped so much that my kids went bonkers for the name- I think the words sweet, cute, pretty, lovely, so her, were thrown around a trillion times)

Have you watched the above Iams “Duck” video? Being somebody who always asks people where their dog’s name comes from, I absolutely adored it. It’s such an heartwarming piece, and exactly how I envision and hope Emma’s life would be- right there with us when we are making memories. <3

aaaacccckkkkk! i cried! we have 5 dogs: Harley named after the motorcycle, Chaka (nudgy chocolate lab) named after the ‘pre-historic monkey’ Chaka in Land of the Lost, Po named after the Ponderosa Pines on our mountain AND Kung Fu Panda, WabiSabi (who had birth defects in her legs) named a Japanese word for imperfect beauty, and Ringo named because we fostered her because the humane society needed to make sure she didn’t have ringworm! before them we had Merlin (husky with blue & brown eyes) named Merlin for the magician, Danko named after the last name of the cutest boy in high school, Uwe named after CO Avalanche hockey player Uwe Krupp, & Abba named after the greatest band ever. (: ya, we’re dog people.

Jody I LOVE all the names and the stories behind them. 🙂 And Danko named after the cute boy in high school – perfection haha! Thanks for sharing. I am crazy for dogs too and my kids are even more in love with animals. They are the best! XOXO, Elif

oh, i forgot!!! i had a pug in high school! her name was Bugs because of her bug eyes! (: i loved that little pugga Bugga wugga.

    • Theboxqueen

Pug!!!!! and Bugs is such a fitting name for a Pug. Did she make all kinds of noises too? Our Daisy snorts and snores all day long, it’s the most adorable thing- ( for us at least) Sometimes I wake up totally ready to roll over hubby thinking he is snoring and it turns out to be Daisy-oopsss :-))) XOXO, Elif

She has hasn’t she 🙂 How did you name Pasha? I always wondered, such a cute name <3 XOXO, Elif

    • Talba1

We found his name on a Turkish website! Thought it fitting for a biiig dog like him:)

  • nuray

Your Emma is one gorgeous girl! She has a great name. I did like your initial name Lemon too.

    • Theboxqueen

Thanks so much! I liked the name Lemon, but I think Emma fit her better 🙂 XOXO, Elif

  • She is a lovely dog, and what a great story behind her name!

When we adopted our little fluffy puppy from the shelter, they had given him the name ‘Marco’, but as he was a stray no-one had claimed he didn’t really answer to his name as he hadn’t gotten used to it. Which worked well for us as I worked with a guy called Marco!

We ended up stopping off at the in-laws on the way home as the drive from the shelter was quite long, and we all sat there throwing out names seeing what ones suited him. I said Cooper and he came running, so Cooper it was!

I love the name Cooper, and how cute that he essentially chose his name coming to it when called Cooper. So adorable!! Tough I am partial to the name Marco as well. My first Golden Retriever was named Marco. That boy holds a special place in my heart. <3 Thanks for stopping by lovely, XOXO, Elif

Our St Bernard was a rescue and he came to us with the name Cujo, which I thought was a very cruel name for such a sweet dog. So we changed it to JoJo and it’s since been shortened to just Joe. It fits him perfectly, as he’s very laid back and mellow, but it’s funny because the guy next door is named Joe and they sometimes get confused with each other.

    • Theboxqueen

Haha for the guy next door comment. 🙂 The same happens to me when I walk Emma to my oldest daughter’s school during pick-up time. I call her Emma, and all the Emma’s turn to look who is calling them :-)) Jojo is a sweet them- St. Bernard’s are such great dogs. Have a happy Sunday Adrian! XOXO, Elif

  • Cheryl

Love seeing Emma! I love the story behind her name and I love that it is so fitting for her. Our cat is named Zumba (like the exercise lol), but very fitting for him because he is quite active. 🙂

    • Theboxqueen

So happy you enjoy it Cheryl, I love sharing about her! 🙂 I remember your cat was named Zumba from a previous convo and I thought then and think now that it is the coolest name!!! <3 For one I LOVE Zumba, the funnest exercise. Plus for a active boy it's perfection haha. 🙂 Hope you are having a great Sunday dear. XOXO, Elif

Your puppy is the cutest. One of my dogs is named cotton after her white fluffy fur. Our cat is named lulu after my childhood cat. I also love learning the meaning behind everyone’s pets.
