I write about my interests frequently here on TheBoxQueen like my love for style, expressing myself through fashion, beauty products, and fitness. I think during my daily life I wear many hats, but one of the most important of them all is undoubtedly being a mom. It helps define my decisions, how I view the world, and of course how I spend the majority of my time.

As my kids have an activity after school pretty much every single day, I have to make a purposeful effort to ensure they get enough playtime as well. I think this is important for their development & creativity and I think they are much more successful academically when they get sufficient play time. You may wonder how I fit playtime into our crazy busy schedule during the school year? I’ve got some personal tips for you ladies based on my experience. Here are my 3 ways to encourage playtime during the school months. Would love to hear yours too!

3 WAYS TO ENCOURAGE PLAYTIME DURING THE BUSY SCHOOL YEAR

1) Stop by a Local Park Before Activities & Have a Snack on Hand

I find that right after school, and right before activities, is a good time for a short play session outside, especially if we are having one of our infrequent non-rainy days. I try to do this at our neighborhood but sometimes it is not possible to stop by home. In those cases I take the kids to other outside parks we know and love near their respective activities. I also make sure to take healthy snacks with me.

Eating a nutritious snack gives the kids the fuel they need to have playtime followed by organized activities such as taekwondo, horseback riding, and soccer to list a few, and gets them through the on-the-go time we have between school pick up and dinner.

CLIF Kid Zbar® ‘s are excellent for this purpose. I’ve been buying CLIF Kid products since my oldest was about two years old and I’ve stayed loyal to them through the years. I LOVE that the products are made with organic ingredients, are non-GMO, and that they come in appropriate portion size for kids in flavors they actually like. It’s also great knowing, as a health consicious mom, that they have no high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors. Yay for healthy snacks!!

2) Leverage the Time In The Car For Play

We spend a lot of time in the car. Two of my kids go to a school about 20 minutes drive from our house which can easily turn into more than 40 minutes during busy times. (which is pretty much every morning and afternoon as we pass a highway) Although this is not the type of play I talked about above, we still take advantage of being together during the mandatory car ride.

We enjoy playing various car games during our rides. I let the kids choose from their favorites. Everything is impromptu. Sometimes we play “I spy with my little eye” looking for shapes on the highway signs, or we play a word game where someone starts with a word and the next person finds another word that starts with the letter initial word ended with.

Other times we play guess the animal game where each person provides clues for others to guess the animal she/he is talking about. Not only is this great bonding time, it is also a transition from a busy day to a bit of relaxation.

3) After Homework Have Half an Hour of Free Playtime At Home or With Family Games

I make sure to give kids playtime outdoors getting fresh air, and lots of exercise. There are many days in the NW though that are super rainy, and muddy during fall & winter. We definitely utilize our time at home for free playtime as well.

I think its as important for the kids to be able to relax at their own house, and get to be creative. This time is usually after homework, and I see them choose to do artwork, create lego masterpieces :-), make necklaces out of beads, play soccer with our dogs tennis ball haha, use my subscription boxes to make forts, and many more. There are also times when they ask for family board games and we do that as well which is great for connecting and being silly, and fun together.

How do you ladies fit in playtime in your kids schedules? I would LOVE to learn your tips and tricks to add to mine. <3

  • Those CLIF bars are so good 🙂

My son loves the brownie version of CLIF bars. He eats one daily. I also value playtime. Outside play is the best for kids to be imaginative.

I think outside play brings out a different type of creativity in kids. I am all for it myself and I love to be outside with them. 🙂 Brownie flavor is one of my personal faves. XOXO, Elif
